For those that know me and my skincare journey, you know I’ll do anything to help improve the look of my skin and help fight signs of aging.
Having said that, if you’re not familiar with my skincare journey, to make a long story short: for about 10 years of my life, I struggled with severe acne, which ended up being detrimental to both my self-esteem and my mental health.
I’ve now cleared my acne, but I still do everything in my power to keep my skin looking its best.
And that includes jade rolling regularly! (legit just did it last night)
You can read all about the things women with clear skin always do in this post, and if you’re looking for the best makeup removers, I’ve got a whole list here (spoiler alert: women with clear skin ALWAYS remove their makeup).
But really, whether you’re struggling with your skin or not, I think jade is something everyone should get into.
Not only is it great for the overall look of your skin, but it’s also super relaxing.

What Is A Jade Roller?
First things first, if you’re not familiar at all with a jade roller, this is what it looks like:
(this particular jade roller from Herbivore is available at Sephora)
All jade rollers are a little different, but generally speaking, there’s always a piece of solid jade attached to a handle, sort of resembling a traditional paint roller.
Oftentimes, you’ll find there are two ends. One end is usually larger and is great for rolling on your cheeks, forehead, and chin. The other end can vary.
As shown in the above example, sometimes the second end is smaller and is used to get more specific areas of the face, like under the eyes and around the mouth.
I’ve also seen the other end of the roller have a textured surface, which is there to stimulate collagen production in the skin (more on this later).
Either way, the general shape is the same.
Beyond the actual shape, though, there’s not much else to know about the jade roller other than that its been used since the 17th century, primarily in China, and is a skincare tool that has gained popularity in modern mainstream beauty routines.
But what does a jade roller actually claim to? Let’s discuss.
What Are The Benefits of Jade Rolling // What Does a Jade Roller Do?
In a nutshell, a jade roller is a skincare tool that helps with improving your skin’s glow and elasticity, but let’s look a little closer at each individual benefit.
1. Depuffs Face (including eye bags)
If you’ve ever heard of lympathetic drainage or facial massage, it probably won’t surprise you that a jade roller aids in reducing inflammation and puffiness in the face.
By rolling the cool jade across your face, towards your ears, you help the body rid itself of any built up lymph (liquid in your tissue). Not only is this helpful for reducing puffiness, it also helps the body push the lymph towards the nodes in your body, where white blood cells are high. In doing so, you help to ensure that the white blood cells are able to kill toxins/bacteria build-up in your face.
In addition, the natural coolness of the jade helps soothe the skin, calming inflammation.

2. Relaxes Facial Muscles
If you’ve ever tried jade rolling you know how relaxing the process can be.
In fact, even if there weren’t any direct facial benefits, jade rolling would still be worth doing.
You might not realize it, but we carry a lot of tension in our faces. While tight shoulders are often the first spot we look to when thinking of stress and tension, it is our face that almost always is the first place we start tightening.
A jade roller provides you with an easy way to give yourself a massage and relax all those tight muscles.
3. Helps Fights Signs of Aging, Fine Lines, and Wrinkles
Speaking of tightness in the face, I think we all know that tension and stress are never great things for anti-aging. As mentioned, jade rolling reduces that aging tension.
In addition, jade rolling helps to lift the skin and give it some plumpness, primarily because you’re increasing circulation in your face.
Getting this lifted and plump look is particularly effective if you’re using a jade roller that has a textured end to it.
Why?
Because, as mentioned above, that little textured area helps to stimulate, not only circulation, but also collagen in the face, which is key to youthful skin.
Essentially this act of using a textured end jade roller is a less invasive version of micro-needling (when you stick small needles into your skin in order to stimulate the production of collagen).
If you’re interested in micro-needling, you can read all about its anti-aging benefits here.
4. Helps Your Skin Absorb Products
If you’re serious about your skincare, chances are you use various skincare products on a daily basis.
Oils, serums, masks, the works…
While you certainly don’t need a jade roller to see results from using these products, a jade roller can help your skin absorb the products more deeply.
This is especially true if you apply the product, like a serum, and then use the jade roller to work the product in, rather than just your hands.
This way, you get the added benefit of the cooling jade, and the relaxing rolling motion, while ensuring your skin is really thoroughly getting all the benefits of whatever skincare products you’re using.
Note: This is my absolute favorite serum that I always use with my jade roller. It helps with collagen production, brings radiance and glow, and delivers all day hydration. The fact that it smells amazing is just an added bonus.
5. Additional Jade Rolling Benefits
If you look into jade rolling, you’ll find there’s a lot of different opinions and claims out there about its benefits.
Some people say that jade rolling helps those suffering with acne.
Some make claims that jade rolling can reduce the sizes of your pores.
I’ve even heard that jade rolling can reduce the look of genetic dark under eye circles.
There’s less evidence to back up these claims so I didn’t give each of them their own category, but they are things to keep in mind.
In particular, that claim about acne reduction makes sense to me, considering acne is often a sign of bacteria build-up and stress. If you’re getting rid of bacteria by way of lymphatic drainage and easing facial tension, it makes sense that jade rolling would help fight acne, right? (just something to keep in mind if you do suffer from acne).
At the end of this post I’ll go into more detail about the specific benefits of jade rolling that I’ve personally seen, but in general, I think the main thing to keep in mind with jade rolling is that it’s not a miracle skincare tool.
When it comes to taking care of your skin and getting that glow, it’s all about taking care of your skin from multiple angles.
This includes the standard cleansing and moisturizing, but it also includes eating well, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, using non-pore clogging makeup (I use It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream, and you can read about why I love this CC Cream here), and using high quality skincare that’s non-irritating (you can check out my list of the best skincare here).
A jade roller is just an added bonus to an already established skincare routine.
How To Properly Jade Roll
If you’re on board with adding a jade roller into your skincare routine, you’re probably wondering how to properly jade roll.
Don’t worry, I’ve got your back.
To properly jade roll, it’s important to roll outwards, towards your ears.
You want to push all that lymph towards your nodes, located by your ears. You also then want to jade roll down your neck tp help the drainage process.
I did this wrong for a month when I first got my jade roller, so in order to better illustrate how to properly jade roll, I highly recommend watching this video so you can get the hang of jade rolling.
I found a lot of videos that didn’t show the proper way to jade roll, so either watch this video, or just make sure you’re pushing the jade roller out towards your ears. That’s the most important part.
Also, if you do want to use an oil or serum while you’re jade rolling (highly recommend since it helps the jade roller roll more smoothly), this is my absolute favorite serum from Ole Henriksen. It smells SO freaking good, and it instantly livens up my face and gives me a glow.
How Often Should You Use a Jade Roller?
How often you use your jade roller is really all about personal preference.
As mentioned above, a jade roller is not a miracle cure to help you get bright, glowing skin.
Instead, it should be used as an additional skincare tool to help aid in the overall goal of improved skin.
Having said that, to really see the benefits of jade rolling, I would recommend jade rolling everyday.
It’s super simple to do while you’re watching TV at night, or even while reading a book, assuming you can hold the book open with one hand.
Additionally, you can always jade roll in the mornings, which is nice for waking up the skin and depuffing the face (we tend to be puffiness in the morning).
You can also keep your jade roller in the freezer overnight to really give the jade a cooling effect when you roll. Just keep in mind that jade is naturally cool, so keeping your roller in the fridge is not absolutely necessary.
So, does a jade roller actually work for the average individual? Here’s my experience
To end, you’re probably wondering whether jade rollers actually work?
Do they really give you a better glow?
Will they actually help with anti-aging?
Are they truly worth adding to your beauty routine?
Well, to put it simply, in my experience: yes, a jade roller is absolutely worth adding to your beauty routine.
For me, these are the three key benefits I get from my jade roller:
1. It helps with lymphatic drainage
I’m not sure if being prone to lymph in your face is an actual thing, but I have always found that my face tends to get a lot more puffy than the average individual. Because of this, I almost always wake up with puffy eyes, and I always feel my face is a little more round than I would like.
Having said that, when I regularly jade roll, I definitely notice a difference in my face’s shape.
Naturally I will always have a rounder face because…well, that’s just my genetics, but when I jade roll, my cheekbones look more pronounced and I feel my jawline is more defined.
It basically gives me a non-invasive face lift and sharpens my cheekbones. Not a bad payoff for a little rolling at night, I would say.
2. It reduces facial tension/promotes relaxation
Personally, as mentioned, I tend to jade roll at night.
While I think jade would feel great in the morning, I often forget to do it, or just don’t have the time to.
But, at night, when I’m winding down and watching TV, I absolutely love jade rolling.
It’s so relaxing and I really enjoy the routine of it.
I always notice when I jade roll before bed, I feel more relaxed and at ease when my head hits the pillow.
3. It helps absorb products
No doubt about it: when I use my Truth Serum and jade roll, my skin always looks better the next morning in comparison to when I just use my hands to work the product in.
Of course the product stills has an effect with or without the jade roller, but with it, the difference is noticeable.
Plus, you get all the other benefits, so why not work the products in with a jade roller, right?
Does a Jade Roller Help With Anti-Aging?
You’ll notice I didn’t mention anti-aging as one of the benefits of jade roller.
And the reason is because I honestly just don’t know if it does.
I’m 28 and don’t have a lot of wrinkles or fine lines to begin with, so it’s hard for me to test this.
With that in mind, though, as mentioned, I do find that the jade roller helps lift everything up and make my cheekbones sharper because of the lymphatic drainage and increased circulation in my face.
I would say the anti-aging benefits of a jade roller are more short-term, but keep in mind, there’s no harm in using a jade roller, and if it contributes some anti-aging benefits down the road, no matter how small, I say, why not give it a try?
Conclusion: Is a Jade Roller Worth It?
To put it simply: in my experience, yes, if you care about skincare, a jade roller is absolutely worth having at your disposal.
As mentioned, it’s important to keep in mind that the jade roller is not a miracle skincare solution, but it is a nice little addition to to an already developed skincare routine.
Remember, if skincare overwhelms you and you’re looking for some product recommendations of where to start, this list of the ultimate skincare products should help you out.
Otherwise, if you already have your skincare routine down, and you’re looking to further improve it, I can’t say enough good things about having a jade roller on hand. The benefits have been clear in my experience, and I truly believe everyone can improve their skin with a jade roller.
